Max and Caroline try to find Chestnut a job so the horse will have lodging and shelter for the winter. When Max's stove breaks, Caroline tries to return some expensive rings to Barney's department store, but discovers her surname is no longer an asset at the store where she used to get special treatment.
In the midst of her new obsession with couponing, Caroline discovers the secret ingredient to Max's cupcakes. Meanwhile, Caroline attempts to rekindle an old flame of hers. Max tries to pass off her cupcakes as kosher when she and Caroline serve them at a boy's Bar Mitzvah. Max joins Caroline on a trip to visit her father in prison. Max and Caroline take a vacation from their lives when they are asked to dog-sit at a couple's posh apartment.
In an effort to raise money to help Caroline's father, Max convinces Caroline to partake in a clinical drug trial. Caroline promises Earl that she will drop his tax return in the mail, but when she learns that Max has never filed her taxes, she gets sidetracked trying to help Max. Only one thing stands in their way -- they're broke. At first, Max sees Caroline as an entitled rich girl, but she's surprised to find that Caroline has as much substance as she does style.
As the girls' tally expands week to week, they become closer to their goal When Max and Caroline met Martha Stewart at a gala event and gave her one of their cupcakes to taste, they were thrilled to get a positive response! Now, Max and Caroline attempt to keep the faith that Martha Stewart will call and help support their cupcake business. Meanwhile, Caroline loses a lucky keepsake. Max and Caroline show their true colors when the diner gets robbed. Meanwhile, everyone sees a surprising new side of Han.
Max and Caroline put their baking skills to the test when they audition to be contestants on the hit cooking show "Cupcake Wars. Max and Caroline are cast as zombie extras when they reach the movie set in Texas where Randy is working. When Max and Caroline get home from their road trip, Caroline discovers she likes the dessert bar renovations as much as she likes Bobby Christopher Gorham , the contractor on the job.
Also, Max rushes to Randy's side when she hears he's in the hospital in New York City, and Sophie joins a mommy group that cares more about partying than baby talk.
When Caroline and Max are asked to speak about their business at Caroline's alma mater, Max decides to show Caroline the college party scene; Oleg tries to bond with Barbara, but Sophie is being too possessive; Han practices magic with Earl.
Earl is afraid he can't keep up with his long-lost sweetheart when she visits from Cuba, asking him to take her sightseeing around the country.
When the women take a bartending class so they can add cocktails to the dessert bar menu, Max gets chickenpox, leaving Caroline to take the exam on her own. When Max and Caroline hire a popular bartender, their dessert bar business booms; Han becomes addicted to the new bartender's signature cacao drink; Sophie adjusts to being a mom.
